AS4747-2025: What the New Water Metering Standard Means for You
The updated Australian Standard for non-urban water meters (AS4747-2025) came into force in June 2025. If you're extracting water under license, whether for irrigation, stock, or other purposes. Here's what you need to know.
What's Changed?
The new standard doesn't introduce new technology. It tightens the rules around proving that metering systems work as intended.
In practical terms: regulators are looking more closely at whether your meter data can be trusted, and whether you can document it. There's greater emphasis on proper installation, validation records, and increasingly, telemetry.
Who's Affected?
Requirements vary by state and entitlement size, but the key thresholds are:
Over 100ML entitlement: Pattern-approved AS4747 meter, DQP installation, and telemetry required
Bores 200mm+ with 100ML+ entitlement: Now require telemetry
Coastal NSW users (100ML+): Must comply by December 2026
The $22.6 million federal Telemetry Uplift Program is funding device installations across the Murray-Darling Basin, if you're eligible, you may get telemetry installed at no cost.
